El Chaltén - Hiking in the National Park around Fitz Roy 3.400 m.ö.h
Argentina (El Chaltén) 2005-11-12
After 5 hours on dusty and bumpy roads we reached El Chaltèn. It is a very small "town" with hiking as primary objective. Accommodation was in a hostel - we shared room with Debra and Richard from England. They are also on a 1-year tour around the world and we can assure you that they where the only one that was happy on the Argentinean pub in El Chaltèn watching the friendly game between Argentina and England (Yes, England won 3-2!!!!).
We had 3 lovely hiking days with better and better weather - we started with very cloudy skies and strong winds and ended up with no wind and a big sun from a clear blue sky.The main mountain in the area is Fitz Roy - a 3.400 meter high granite peak surrounded with glaciers. A very tuff peak to conquer - the first time was 1952.
The hikes where wonderful and in average we hiked 8 hours per day - most of the time with wonderful views and a lot of animals around us - especially birds. Almost always we see condors - they are hundreds and hundreds of meters up in the sky looking for dead animals to feed on.
We lost half a kilo - very much needed after all the wonderful food we have been eating in Brazil and Argentina since we arrived in Rio de Janiero Sept 21.
Now we head for 3 more hiking days (maybe another 1/2 a kilo!?) in the world famous Torres Del Paine in Chile.
