El Calafate: Thunder without clouds or rain at Perito Moreno

Argentina (El Calafate) 2005-11-10

Hola amigos de Suecia y otras paises.

The sound when Perito Moreno glacier "calves" a ton or tens of tons of ice is like a thunderstorm. The sight is very impressive and we sat for hours in front of the 60 meter tall front of the glacier and just waited for the Big Bang. Eventually it came and we managed to take some photos before and after - that was impressive!
Perito Moreno glacier is one of the few glacier that are still in balance, i.e. it is not retreating and the calving phenomena that occurs every day is becoming a huge tourist attraction - and REALLY worth a visit.

The second day in El Calafate we went on a full day excursion to some of the other glaciers in Lake Argentino, among them Upsala Glacier named after the Swedish town Uppsala, north of Stockholm. We cruised between icebergs bigger than the boat and to the front of the glaciers. Security says that they can not go closer than 800 meter to the ice wall, the respect for the ice is big and we where glad for that. A 130 meter wall that can collapse any minute is something to be respectful for!
A you might notice we are a little out of synch on the dates and we have also had 3 fantastic days in El Chalten after El Calafate hiking around the impressive Fitz Roy massive - more details on that will follow when we get back to civilization and when they have better internet capacity to load pictures. Let us just say one thing - VOW!!!

Tomorrow we head for Chile and Torres del Paine.

Greetings/Evanders
